Greensboro Winston Salem Homeowners Association VP Serves Community By...

Executive from AMG, which guides and assists association boards to help protect the association's interests, enhance the lives of community members and improve property values, delivers meals to those in need.

Paul Mengert, President of Association management Group (AMG), one of the Carolinas' largest professional homeowners association managers, has awarded Corporate Vice President Spencer Ferguson the AMG Community Service Award for outstanding community service. Once a month, Ferguson spends a day delivering food for Mobile Meals. Mobile Meals is a service of Senior Resources of Guilford, a non-profit promoting independent living of county older adults age 60+ that helps keep seniors and shut-ins in their homes through a variety of programs, including nutritious meals delivered by community volunteers. Ferguson has been one of those volunteers for 11 years.

His volunteer day starts with a pick-up of meals from the truck, usually an entree such as a spaghetti dinner or meat and potatoes with milk, dessert, bread and fruit. He spends the day delivering 30 meals along a 30-mile route to what he calls Everyday Americans-former teachers and businesspeople, clerical and retail employees, factory and hospitality workers. For Ferguson, it isn't about the food-it's about the connection. "Anybody can deliver a meal," he explains. "It takes longer for me because I have longer route and I like to stay and talk. I enjoy the human interaction." One of his most memorable deliveries was a snowy day near Christmas. He recalls the recipients telling him they had no family and wouldn't have any gifts this year, which made them sad...at first. But, the longer Ferguson stayed and the more they talked, the better they felt. Ferguson left feeling he'd accomplished his mission. "Mobile Meals is a program that allows seniors to have a meal and interact with someone," he points out. "I like knowing that people who can't afford or are unable to go out and buy a meal are getting nutritious food. But, more importantly, I like that I'm there for them. These people are nice and want to talk. You are most likely the only person they see that day."

Of all the service opportunities a busy executive could choose, why pick one that takes a full day of driving and heavy lifting? "This is the only meal of the day for most of these people. If we didn't deliver they probably wouldn't eat so my service is vital to their survival," Ferguson concludes. "Most of us don't realize how fortunate we are. Mobile Meals helps me connect with people in situations they might not have created. I believe we should all come together, regardless of race and religion, to reach out and help each other. I'm just doing my part in the human race."

"AMG knows managing high quality communities includes making contributions to the broader communities in which we live and work," says AMG President Paul Mengert. "Spencer's efforts exemplify our corporate values and commitment." To learn more about Mobile Meals, visit www.senior-resources-guilford.org/ or call the Greensboro office, 336.373.4816.
